A businessman from Ballito in KwaZulu-Natal has come forward to claim the second-biggest PowerBall jackpot of all time, after winning R167 million in the draw on Friday 11 February.
Mystery had surrounded the winner’s identity initially when he did not stake a claim straight away after matching the numbers 9, 18, 34, 36 and 49, plus the PowerBall of 12.
However, he has now got in touch just a few days after the draw and can look forward to receiving an eight-figure sum.
He has decided to stay anonymous, but it has been revealed that he is 67 years old, a keen golfer and also enjoys taking long walks on the beach. He had kept his ticket in a safe before coming forward, telling only his immediate family about the win.
The winner is adamant that he will not make any drastic life changes. He will start by settling his debts, before making several investments and donations to charity.
It was also announced after the draw that he had spent R150 on his ticket and had played using the Quick Pick method.
“This is the second-highest PowerBall jackpot win since February 2019 when we had a R232 million winner. In July 2021, we also had a R158 million jackpot winner,” said Ithuba CEO Charmaine Mabuza.
