Lotto Plus 1 follows the same format as the main Lotto draw, in which six main numbers and a seventh Bonus Ball are drawn from a pool of 52. The numbers a player chose for the main Lotto draw are automatically entered into Lotto Plus 1, where a fresh set of numbers will be drawn. Matching all six main numbers wins the jackpot, but prizes start at R15 for matching two main numbers plus the Bonus Ball and rise from there as you match more of the balls that are drawn.

In May 2016, changes were made to the Lotto Plus 1 jackpot format; instead of offering a fixed prize in every draw, the jackpot began to roll over and now grows in value from game to game if no one matches all six main numbers. Previously, if there was no top prize winner, the jackpot amount rolled down to the next winning prize tier. In August 2017, a Lotto Plus 2 game was also introduced to offer more fun to Lotto players.
