How to Play and Win Matchplay 9/14
Learn how to play Matchplay 9/14 and what you need to do to win a prize. It works a bit differently to other Matchplay games as you don’t have to make a prediction on every match on the fixture list. Follow the steps below to take part in the next game.
Pick up a fixture list
The National Lottery operator finalises its next set of fixtures a week before the first match on the list and makes them available at retailers. You can view the next round of matches on the Matchplay 9/14 Fixtures page.
The matches that you can bet on change as the soccer season progresses. They can be taken from international tournaments such as the World Cup or various domestic competitions around the world such as the English Premier League.
Predict the outcome of nine matches
Each row on your betslip corresponds to a match on the fixture list and the columns denote the three possible match outcomes: 1 for a home win, X for a draw, and 2 for an away win.
Mark your Selections for nine of the 14 fixtures. You cannot choose to bet on more matches, or fewer matches. The advantage here is that you can decide which fixtures to make predictions on, so you can play the ones you are confident on and leave others which you are less sure about.
QuickPlay option
If you don’t wish to make your own predictions, opt for a Quick Pick instead. The downside is that they are random selections and not based on any sort of strategy or insight, but it is a rapid way to play and boosts your chances of winning.
Each combination is different, so you just have to decide how many boards to generate – 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 24, 32, 64, 128 or 256. The cost increases proportionally as you play more boards.
Pay for your entries
Review the selections on your betslip, then give it to the teller and pay for your ticket. If you play online, you just need to check out with your bets and ensure there are enough funds in your account to cover the cost. Matchplay 9/14 costs R2 per board.
You’ll receive a ticket showing your predictions. For example: ‘MEXICO_SERBIA 1--’ would mean that you have bet on the home team (Mexico) to beat the away team (Serbia). ‘MEXICO_SERBIA -X-’ would mean that you have predicted the match will end in a draw.
How to Win Matchplay 9/14
To win a prize on Matchplay 9/14, you must get eight or nine predictions correct out of nine. The match result is taken as the official score at the end of the fixture and does not count extra time or penalty shootouts.
Fifth percent of the revenue from ticket sales is used to fund prizes. Just over half of that money is used to pay those winners who get all nine of their predictions correct. The rest goes to the players who get eight out of nine. The following table shows the prize divisions and prize pool percentage.
| Prize Division | Correct Predictions | Prize Pool Percentage | Odds of Winning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 9 | 55% | 1 in 19,683 |
| 2 | 8 | 45% | 1 in 1,094 |
If there are no winners in either prize division, the money rolls over to Division 1 for the next draw. It is a game which gives you a great chance to win big prizes. The odds displayed might make it look difficult to win, but these are based on random selections.
The results of soccer matches, of course, are not determined entirely by chance. They depend on multiple factors, such as the skill of the competing teams. And in Matchplay 9/14, you can also choose which fixtures to bet on from a list of 14, allowing you to cherry-pick the ones which might be easier to predict.
