Street Vendor To Give Up 3AM Starts After R86 Million Lotto Win

Last Updated: Wednesday, 14 September 2022, 15:35pm

A street vendor from Cape Town has declared that he will never ‘go stand in the rain to sell bananas’ again after winning a record R86 million on Lotto.

The lucky ticket holder matched all the numbers in the Lotto draw on Saturday 3 September. It was the second-largest jackpot ever seen in the history of the game, but ended up creating the biggest single winner as the record R110 million prize from 2018 was split four ways.

The winner wasted little time in coming forward to claim his money, telling reporters and lottery officials that it had ‘changed our lives completely overnight’.

He has kept his identity private, but it has been revealed that he is a 42-year-old from Durbanville in the Western Cape.

“There is no pressure on me any more. I am never going to wake up at 3 o’clock in the morning and go stand in the rain to sell bananas. I am not going to stand in the wind any more. I am not going to push my car when it is stuck in the mornings,” he said, talking to eNCA.

While overjoyed to be free of financial pressure for the rest of his life, the winner has already decided to move house because he was too well known in Durbanville.

“As a trader, I worked with a lot of people. In Durbanville everybody knows who I am and know I won the Lotto so I couldn’t stay. We had to move for safety reasons.

“Not any threat on me. Just that where I traded is at the taxi rank so you don’t want to be among people when you know you have a lot of money knowing what people are capable of. You read the newspapers and see what people do to other people because of money.”

He is now looking forward to a bright future, with plans to invest some of the money and buy his wife the house they have always wanted. He is also keen to go to the 2023 Rugby World Cup to cheer on his country, saying: “I will go to France next year and I will watch every single game played by the Springboks.. That was my dream.”

Reflecting on his good fortune, the winner added: “Always do your best and always be kind to people. Be a giver, pray for people, and never forget there is God.”

Lotto draws continue every Wednesday and Saturday night, with PowerBall draws on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and a range of other games to enjoy throughout the week. Keep track of all the latest results as soon as they are available to find out if you are a winner.
