Gauteng Lotto Plus 1 Player Wins R32 Million
Last Updated: Wednesday 20 January 2021, 13:56
The first big Lotto Plus 1 jackpot win of the year has come from a lucky player in Gauteng, after they correctly matched the winning numbers 7, 20, 21, 31, 39 and 52 on Saturday 16 January.
The lucky ticket holder scooped the R32,250,332 prize after a run of rollovers that began at the end of September, when a lucky ticket holder won a cool R1.6 million.
Confirmed just a few days after the draw took place, the winning ticket for January’s big jackpot draw was sold in Turfontein, Johannesburg (Gauteng). In addition, it was also confirmed by the National Lottery that the ticket holder bought a Quick Pick selection, rather than selecting their own numbers. Their wager amount was R80 and no further details have yet been released about the winner.
In total, R7,302,390 was spent on tickets for the draw, with a R2.50 entry price for Plus 1, that means 2,920,956 tickets were purchased. From those, 72,132 went on to win a prize ranging from R15 to the jackpot. The average prize won in the draw was R481.27. If you haven’t yet checked your tickets, you can still do so by using the automatic ticket checker.
The payout of 32 million rand places the latest winner at #3 in the Lotto Plus 1 winners list, close behind a R39 million win in Limpopo in 2017 and a record R58 million jackpot which was split between two winners in November 2018.
December PowerBall Winners Receive Payout
In other lottery news, the 20 PowerBall winners from the draw on 1 December 2020 that produced the incredible combination: 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and PowerBall 10, have all now come forward and claimed their R5.6 million share of the overall jackpot.
The draw, which attracted attention worldwide due to the numbers drawn, offered the eighth largest jackpot in SA PowerBall history, with a total pool of R113,769,468 allocated to the Division 1 tier. The pattern of numbers drawn saw 20 players split the entire Div 1 prize pool, which is understandable when such a combination of numbers are played.
Statisticians and lottery gurus have often advised against playing combinations such as 1,2,3,4,5,6 or 5,6,7,8,9,10, due to the likelihood that a large number of other players will have played those same numbers. As luck would have it, playing such a combination worked to the benefit of the 20 winners, as they each became overnight multi-millionaires!
